...Authenticity and Credibility Of News Questioned

Four persons have been arrested in Accra, in connection with an alleged coup attempt.

Among the four, the most conspicuous is Lt. Colonel Larry Gbevlo Lartey (pictured), the last Commanding Officer of the erstwhile Forces Reserve Battalion (FRB) better known as the 64 Infantry Battalion under the Government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The arrest, according to “The Independent” a private newspaper, was effected between midnight last Saturday and early dawn Sunday at the rendezvous of the group in Accra.

“Though initial reports of the arrests are hazy, The Independent has it on record that the arrests were effected after weeks of strenuous and diligent monitoring of meetings Lt. Col. Gbevlo Lartey, (a very good friend of the former president) has had with some members of the group whose names could not be obtained.”

Word however has it that they are all elements of the erstwhile, FRB. Monday August 04, 2003 was the scheduled date on which the alleged coup plotters intended to strike.

“Our sources told us that the state security agents who had an earlier hint of the development managed to infiltrate he ranks of the Gbevlo-Lartey group and secured some recordings of their intentions which informed the judgement of the security agencies to pick them up for further questioning.

The arrests were in tandem with some security reports about recent developments at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, where one of the ‘Quality Grain Three’ is reported to have told some of the inmates weeks to the arrests that by August 04, he and some others will be out of the jail.

There is also evidence that the time was ripe for the alleged plotters to strike following certain developments on the Internet in connection with recent developments at the Nsawam Prisons in relation to Charles Quansah, the condemned prisoner who was convicted of the murder of some of the murdered women.

A fine officer by Ghana Armed Forces Standard, Lt. Col. Gbevlo-Lartey’s involvement in the preliminary findings of the state security has shocked some political pundits who thought that he had been assimilated into the mainstream Armed Forces following the disbandment of the FRB on assumption of office by the Kufuor administration.

State security officials were tight lipped on the matter as of yesterday when we contacted some of them but it is expected that in the coming weeks, details of their findings will be made public.

Some Ghanaians have received the news with shock and have been congratulating the security forces for their vigilance, which has led to the busting of the alleged coup plotters. But others have raised doubts about the authenticity and credibility of the news.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the alleged coup plotters have been granted bail and are on strict surveillance, a development that has led to many questions being asked about the credibility of the report. Those who doubt the report argue that, it is incredible for the police to grant bail to alleged coup plotters since coup is a treasonable offence.
