Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, has made some wild allegations against veteran journalist Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako Jnr.
Speaking about his recently launched book, “From Persecution to Freedom: Reflections on my journey through the Justice System in Ghana,” in an interview on Accra FM, ACP Dr. Agordzo alleged that Kweku Baako was used to tarnish his image during the coup trial.
According to him, the veteran journalist and a host of others were made to watch and listen to audio-visuals of the coup plot he was accused of being part of, in order to devise a grand plan against him.
“You don’t know when the police would be sent to come and arrest you. You don’t know when the system will gang up against you like they ganged up against me… I’ll put it this way. Kweku Baako and others, and certain journalists, were made to go and watch the videos and listen to the audio. I have this information authoritatively.
“That is why when you listen to Kweku Baako, and I’m saying this authoritatively, on Newsfile he said Agordzo was not on the video. He did not surface anywhere. Where did he get that information if he did not watch it? Do you understand me? … And that is why even when I did not report to BNI, they had already written that I had reported because there was some kind of propaganda that he had put in place already,” he said.
He added, “Then Kweku Baako put out information in the public domain to destroy my image in order to paint me black without finding out from me. For me, it was deliberate, and I have stated it there (in his book).”
About the coup plot:
Dr. Agordzo, who was accused of abetting the overthrow of the government, was one of three individuals acquitted by the High Court on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.
The other two were Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli and Corporal Seidu Abubakar, both military officers. They were found not guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason and high treason after a full trial.
However, six of their co-accused were convicted on the same charges and sentenced to death. They included the late Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, the alleged mastermind and owner of the Citadel Hospital, where the suspects were arrested during a police raid in 2019.
The others were Donya Kafui, Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, Warrant Officer Class Two Esther Saan Dekuwine, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, and Sergeant Averey Amedzor.
