Coup Plotters Before Court

Mon, 6 Jun 2005 Source: --

Six people who were arrested on June 2, on suspicion of engaging in acts to subvert the state (which usually means "plotting to overthrow the government") are expected to be arraigned before a court this morning.

Information minister Dan Botwe disclosed this to the media over the weekend

The six, who were arrested at a location in Accra, were found in possession of large quantities of AK47 assault rifles, grenades, pistols and ammunition

On Saturday, the Director of Police Criminal Investigations Department, Mr. David Apeatu disclosed that the security agencies were still hunting for one man, known as Agaga, a suspected warlord, whom it is alleged was behind the acts, calculated to injure the security of the state.

p> Security agency heads have since remained tightlipped.

Mr. Botwe says the CID is in control of the case but declined to give further information on preferred charges against the six.

? I don?t think it is prudent for me to talk about that but once they are being taken to court, I?m sure they might have discussed with the appropriate law enforcement agencies to present appropriate charges against them,? he says.

? So once they put that statement out the use of subversion will come out in court and whether it was internal or external will come out? he says
