Tema, April 27, GNA - ASP Rebecca Nyamah, Head of the Tema Office of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DVVSU), formerly WAJU has advised couples against deserting their matrimonial homes, when their children face health problems, but stay together to help the children. When one deserts the home in such times, the other left behind is traumatised and can not take good care if the sick child. ASP Nyamah said these were some of the pressures that compelled some children to run onto the streets, becoming way wards and eventually turning into social miscreants.
She said her outfit is investigating a case in which a mother of a three year old boy, who has been lame since birth, was abandoned by his mother, Madam Samalatu Musah on his father, Mr Hadi Mohammed and left the home, because she could no longer handle him as result of the deformity.
The boy is currently in the care of a Madam Sawulatu Alhassan, a food vendor at the Tema Fishing Harbour, while efforts were being made to trace the mother.
However, ASP Nyamah said in the face of this difficult situation Mr Mohammed is negotiating with an orphanage to look after the boy, as he could not stay with Madam Alhassan forever. She called on affected spouses to quickly report any runaway spouse, who wanted to dodge responsibility to the police for his or her apprehension so that the two should together face the unfortunate situation as this could psychologically lead to fast healing of the sick person.
To avoid such situations, ASP Nyamah appealed to aspiring couples to go for marriage counselling to know what entailed in marriage before contracting it, as normally children become the sufferers in time of uncertainties. Meanwhile, the DVVSU is seeking justice to prevail in a case, which an imbecile, Ms Hannah Akyea, 24 now deceased had a child with a Seaman, Benjamin Harry Hyde, 41, but later denied responsibility because the imbecile was dead. ASP Nyamah said when the imbecile identified Hyde resident at the Sakomono Village, as the one responsible for the pregnancy he initially admitted it but denied later after she was dead. She said after announcing to the Tema Circuit Court "B" that was then trying the case that she had expired "suspect was discharged on the grounds that victim was dead and suspect was over due in custody". The mother of the deceased, Madam Victoria Amaning, who is now weak and poor, could not cater for the boy because she has no money and this could affect his upbringing.
The ASP therefore, appealed to the public to donate generously towards the paternity test to establish the biological father of the child to look after him.
As soon as that is established she said, Hyde would be re-arrested to face trial she stated.
