An Accra Circuit Court on Monday fined two persons a total of GH¢ 26,400.00 for conspiracy to commit crime and defrauding by false pretence.
The convicts Corporal Mariam Ibrahim, a policewoman was fined GH¢ 24,000 or in default serve four years and Ida Kyeremaa, trader, fined GH¢ 2,400 or in default serve a year in prison.
Presenting the facts earlier, Chief Inspector E. Afful told the court that complainants in the case are residents of Accra and both convicts live at the Tesano Police barracks.
He said in the year 2012, the complainants and eighteen others, who were eager to be enlisted into the Ghana Police Service, approached the convict, who promised to assist them.
He said the convicts took advantage of the situation and collected various sums of money, totaling GH¢ 31,000.00 from the complainants with the promise to assist them but could not fulfill the promise.
The prosecution said the complainants, therefore, reported the matter to the police, where the convicts were subsequently invited for questioning.
“They admitted the offence in their caution statements and according to Mariam, the money they collected was given to one Alhaji, a politician, whom they could not identify to the police,” Chief Inspector Afful added.
