Court grants 62-year old pensioner bail

Takoradi, May 9 -GNA-A 62-year-old pensioner who stole from his friend's daughter has been granted three million cedis bail by a Takoradi Circuit Court.

He pleaded not guilty and will re-appear before the court on May 23. Prosecuting Police Inspector Grace Appiagyei told the court, presided over by Mr. Mahamadu Iddrisu that the complainant Nana Adjoa is a seamstress while the suspect Mr. Baiden-Amissah alias Dada Fat, is a close friend of her father and had once lived with the victim and her parents but is now living at New Site near Takoradi. She said on April 3 this year, the complainant and her family attended a dinner party together with the Dada Fat at Airport Ridge. The prosecutor said the complainant took along, a ladies bag which contained a ladies sandals, one bracelet, Nokia 2300 mobile phone, a wrist watch, a bunch of keys, a bottle of perfume and 800,000 cedis cash.

Inspector Appiagyei said while at the dinner, the complainant put her bag into a yellow polythene bag near their table but after the dinner at around 0130 Hrs. the following morning, the polythene bag and its contents could not be traced.

The prosecutor said after a fruitless search for the bag, the complainant and some of her family left in one vehicle and left the suspect and the complainant's father behind. Inspector Appiagyei said some few minutes later, when the two men left the dinner grounds, complainants father spotted his friend holding a yellow polythene bag but did not challenge his friend because he assumed that his daughter had found hers.

According to the prosecutor, when complainants father got home and enquired about the missing bag, he was told that it could not be traced but he became suspicious and informed his daughter that he saw Dada Fat holding a similar polythene bag.

The suspect was however, arrested at around the central business district by a relation of the victim, while holding the same bag and when it was searched only the ladies sandals and bracelet were in it. Inspector Appiagyei said the victim told the police that complainant gave the bag to him.

At the same court, Peter Bosomtwi, a 25-year-old driver was granted three million cedis bail and issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Kojo Kaemakyi a fisherman for riotous behaviour. Prosecuting Police Inspector Appiagyei again told the court that the two accused persons were residents of Adjuwa near Takoradi where one Nketsiah had installed himself chief. She said the complainant Kwesi Kum is a petty trader and linguist of Nana Dieku III, the chief of Adjuwa.

Inspector Appiagyei said on March 21, Nana Dieku instructed the complainant to beat a "gon gon" to inform the community to prepare their children for the national immunisation exercise, which was scheduled for March 22 and 23. The prosecutor said the two accused persons who are supporters of Nketsiah, confronted Kum around 0530 hours collected the gon gon from him and sent it to Nketsiah. The complainant however, informed Nana Dieku who reported the incident to the Police.
