An Accra Circuit Court on Friday handed a one year jail term with hard labour to Sunu Kofi, a 26-years-old Farmer.

He was convicted on the charge of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority, contrary to section 2(1) of PNDC Law of 236/90.

The court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, took into consideration the fact that Sunu had been in Police Custody for more than a year.

The facts of the case as presented by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) George Amegah are that, on October 1, 2012, a joint team of Police personnel from the Narcotic Control Board, acting on intelligence gathered, went to Koru near Nkwanta in the Volta Region on an anti-narcotics drug operation.

He said in the course of the operation, the team visited Amegatse, a village near Koru and arrested the convict in his room.

ASP Amegah said a search conducted in his room revealed a blue polythene bag containing quantities of dried leaves suspect to be narcotic substance.

Sunu in his caution statement claimed ownership of the exhibit after which it was forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analytical examination and proved to be narcotic.
