Sekondi, Feb.11 -GNA-A Sekondi District Magistrate's Court on Monday sentenced John Kwabena Dentu, a 27-year old labourer at Tema, to 15 months' imprisonment in hard labour for escaping from lawful custody. The accused pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Albert Deletsa, said on February 8 this year, the accused was taken to a Takoradi Circuit on a rape charge but the court did not sit that day before the Chief Justice was visiting Sekondi-Takoradi. He said the accused told the prosecutor he was sick and as such, the investigator took him to the Police Clinic at Sekondi where he was treated and discharged.

ASP Deletsa said the accused was taken to the Inchaban Police Station and detained in cells and while there, the accused asked for food and when the Policeman on duty opened the cells to give him food, he pushed him away and bolted. He said later, the accused was arrested and charged with the offence.
