Court jails six cable thieves

Mampong (Ash), June 16, GNA - Chief Superintendent Solomon Kwabena Ntim, Mampong Divisional Police Commander has commended people who volunteered information to the police leading to the arrest and prosecution of six cable thieves.

The convicts were involved in frequent stealing of electrical cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana and Vodafone Communication Company at Mampong.

Chief Superintendent Ntim made this commendation during a press briefing at Mampong following the conviction and imprisonment of the six people by a Kumasi High Court presided over by Justice Robin Batu on Monday.

He assured the public of adequate police protection and appealed to people who have any information on activities of criminals to inform the police.

Chief Superintendent Ntim said when the public team-up with the police to combat crime, there would be absolute peace and security in the communities, work places and in the country at large.

He said Maxwell Tuffour, Kwasi Yeboah, Kwadwo Amponsah, Kwadwo Gyamfi, Issifu Abubakr, Iklilu Muhammed and Kwadwo Antwi were arrested by the Police on October 28, 2010 upon a tip-off and were arraigned.

He said Kwadwo Amponsah, Kwadwo Gyamfi, Issifu Abubakr and Iklilu Muhammed were each sentenced to five years imprisonment in hard labour whilst Maxwell Tuffour and Kwasi Yeboah were each slammed with nine years imprisonment in hard labour.

In addition the court imposed a fine of GH¢10,000 on Iklilu Muhammed, a scrap dealer who bought the stolen cables from the thieves.

The Commander said Kwadwo Antwi; an electrical contractor was acquitted and discharged by the court for lack of evidence whilst one Dickson Osei is on the run.
