An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Abdul Majeed Ibrahim, a Cleaner and Fatawo Kwado, Farmer, to 18 years imprisonment each for robbery.
The convicts would also serve 15 years each for conspiracy to commit crime, all to run concurrently.
Prosecuting Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu told the court that the complainant in the case was a motor rider living at Taifa, whilst convicts live at Kokomba Market in Accra.
He said the complainant has been using a motorbike for commercial purposes popularly known as ‘Okada’.
He said on September 15, 2017, the complainant was riding the motorbike when the convicts stopped him and engaged his service to Korle-Gonno. The Complaint charged them GH¢10.00, which they agreed to pay.
The Prosecution said on reaching their destination, the convicts order the complainant to stop and to his surprise, one of the pillion riders spread a substance believed to be powdered Pepper into the complainant’s eyes and blinded him.
He said the convicts managed to snatch the motorbike from the complainant, even though the ignition key was with still with him.
He said the complainant informed the owner of the motorbike about the incident and they mounted a search for the motorbike.
Chief Inspector Adu said on the evening of September 15, between 2000 hours and 2100 hours, a friend of the owner of the motorbike, who was aware of the case spotted the convicts riding the motorbike at Kokomba market area, he, therefore, chased them with his motorbike and stopped them.
The Prosecution said, when they were questioned, Ibrahim, who was riding the motorbike said it belongs to his friend but in the course of the confrontation, Abdul took to his heels.
Luckily, the owner of the motorbike also arrived on the scene and with the help of some boys in the area arrested Ibrahim with the motorbike.
Abdul was subsequently arrested and in their cautioned statement they admitted the offense.
