Court jails two robbers 20 years

Takoradi, June 15, GNA - A Takoradi Circuit Court presided over by Justice Mr Charles Nimako, on Tuesday sentenced two people to a 20- year jail term for robbing a baker of 400 Ghana cedis and a mobile phone. Karim Awudu and Kweku Attah who pleaded not guilty to robbery were e ach sentence to 10 years imprisonment. Police Chief Inspector Alice Parker-Wilson, prosecuting stated that at about 0030 hours in January 2009 the baker was looking for a taxi from Tanokrom, a suburb of Takoradi to her bakery at Lagos Town. Kwame, now at large, who were brandishing machetes attacked her, compelli ng the taxi driver to speed off. She said the robbers succeeded in taking the frightened lady's mobil e phone and 400 Ghana Cedis, who reported the matter to the police. The prosecutor said investigations led to the arrest of Awudu who mentioned Attah and Kwame as accomplices. In the same court, a dock worker, Francis Mensah was fined 240 Ghana

cedis for attempting to stowaway. He pleaded guilty. The prosecutor, Police Inspector Theophilus Agbemerdzi said last Monday, June 7, the accused and other colleagues were assigned to work in a ship christened: "MV SMC" at the Takoradi port. After their assignment the accused person hid in the vessel to stow away, but vigilant security personnel of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority exposed him.
