A self-acclaimed carpenter who allegedly subjected a friend to severe beatings over a mobile phone, has been remanded in police custody by a magistrate court at Akim Oda in the Birim Central Municipality.

Kwabena Amoako Brenya pleaded not guilty to causing harm and would reappear on May 4.

The prosecution told the court presided over by Mr. Albert Owusu Annor, that the complainant Joseph Kwasi, worked at Fawo Dakyi Guest House at Akim Manso, while the accused who claimed to be a carpenter also lived at Akim Manso.

There was a dance at the hotel on April 7, this year and at about 02:00 hours, a mobile phone was found on the floor of the hotel premises for which Kwasi and Brenya claimed ownership but this degenerated into a misunderstanding.

The prosecution stated that other onlookers intervened and asked questions with a view to extracting the truth, and when Brenya could not answer, he took to his heels but Kwasi pursued and arrested him.

At this point, Brenya’s friend who also attended the dance expressed dissatisfaction for Brenya’s arrest and therefore resorted to intimidate the complainant, but it resulted in a scuffle during which Brenya and his friend subjected Kwasi to a severe beating.

Kwasi who was also pulled down sustained multiples of injuries and was rushed to the Akim Oda Government Hospital for treatment. The police later arrested Brenya.**
