Agogo (Ash), March 1, GNA - The Agogo Magistrate court in the Asante-Akim North district of Ashanti on Monday remanded a couple in police custody for allegedly murdering their nine-month-old baby. Kwasi Kyei, 20 and Cecilia Addai, 17, who pleaded guilty, will re-appear on March 2.

Police Inspector E.K. Atatsi told the court, presided over by Mr. John Bosco Naberese that relationship between man and wife went sour and so Kyei took the close friend of his wife with whom he had a child too. He said Cecilia became depressed due to the treatment meted out to her by Kyei and so she left for Accra to stay with her mother but that did not help matters as life became difficult for her and so she left Accra for Nsutamu near Bomfa, her father's hometown.

Inspector Atatsi said the child fell ill and so on February 4, this year, Cecilia brought him to her husband at Agogo but Kyei did not mind the child and rather told Cecilia to find a way of getting rid of the child. He said Kyei therefore, gave Cecilia 30,000 cedis and a substance purported to be a drug to be given to the child on her way to Nsutamu. Inspector Atatsi said Cecilia gave the substance to the child when they reached Konongo but the child started vomiting not quite long after and that this frightened her and so she rushed the child to the Agogo Presbyterian hospital but died an hour later. He said a report was therefore made to the police when it was detected that the substance given the child was poison and the couple were arrested after investigations and charged with the offence.
