Court remands two persons in police custody

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday remanded Prince Amoah, Labourer and Victor Richmond Ato Sagoe, Student, in police custody for conspiracy to commit crime. The accused persons are also facing two counts of attempt to commit crime to wit robbery and murder and possession of ammunition.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty and would re-appear on August 19. Chief Superintendent of Police, Duuti Tuaraka told the court presided over by Ali Baba that on July 28 at about 2100 hours, Victor armed himself with his father’s pistol with 19 rounds of live ammunitions, approached Prince for them to embark on a robbery expedition.

The prosecution said Prince, who is a labourer at the Police hospital Mortuary also invited one Nana Yaw Poku and one other, who are currently on the run to join the gang.

He said the four proceeded to a drinking spot popularly called Container at Osu Oxford Street to plan and they finally agreed to snatch a Toyota corolla cab. Chief Superintendent Duuti said on July 29 at about 1230 hours, Victor was made to stop the taxi with registration number GW 8379-14 being driven by one Bismark Acquaye.

He said the four joined the taxi and Victor, who was in front told the driver to take them to Dzorwulu but on their way after Kawokudi traffic light, Victor asked the driver if he understands Ga language, but the driver responded in the negative even though he was a Ga.

“When the driver got to a dark area, Victor told his accomplices in Ga language that the area was a convenient place for them to snatch the taxi,” he added.

The prosecution said, Victor then instructed the driver to a direction, which was darker, but the driver having heard, their earlier conversation, drove directly to the police snap check, stopped and alerted the policemen on duty.

He said the four came out of the taxi and were ordered to knell down and the policemen then conducted a search on Prince, who was holding a bag, three live ammunitions and a pepper spray was found in the bag.

He said when it was the turn of Victor, he woke up and pulled out a pistol and fired straight onto the chest of one of the policemen, who was on a motor bike patrol at the check point.

Chief Superintendent Duuti said the four took to their heels, but the policemen made a radio calls for re-enforcement, where three patrol cars quickly responded and Victor and Prince were arrested but the other two managed to escape.

A search conducted in the room of Prince revealed extra 15 live ammunitions, the crime scene was also searched and the empty shell fired was also retrieved.
