Former Greater Accra regional Chairman of the biggest opposition party in Ghana, Sammy Crabbe, has denied suspicions that he is fronting for former President John Kufuor, to hijack the New Patriotic Party (NPP) toward pushing Alan Kyeremanten’s 2016 presidential bid.
The suspicion follows Crabbe’s voluntary offer to sponsor the party’s upcoming national congress scheduled for March 1, 2014.
The Party estimates that the entire Congress will cost about Ghc40million.
Crabbe’s magnanimity was criticised by some people within the party, who suspected an ulterior motive.
The cynics believe it is a ploy by his alleged bankroller, Mr. Kufuor, to take over the party, by influencing the entire elections to ensure that pro-Alan Kyeremanten persons are elected into various positions, as part of a grand scheme to facilitate the former trades minister’s election as Flagbearer for the 2016 elections.
Crabbe has, however, told XYZ Breakfast Show host Moro Awudu on Friday that: “Assuming without admitting that [Mr. Kufuor] were doing that, isn’t it a good thing?”
While denying the suspicions, Crabbe fumed that: “…I don’t remember the last time I even met with President Kufuor; it must have been at a function”.
“…I haven’t even met the guy in a long time, Crabbe thundered and added: “…The question is, ‘helping the party at this stage, is it good or bad’?”
He said: “In any case, we should stop speculating and coming up with rumours and propaganda…I think it’s something that we need to weed out of the party”.
