Cudjoe defends Chief Justice over state institutions remarks

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has defended Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie against criticisms over his recent comments on the performance of state institutions.

Cudjoe dismissed suggestions that the Chief Justice’s remarks were politically motivated, arguing that available data supports the view that some state institutions are performing better under the current administration.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com on September 3, 2026, he said the key issue should be whether the Chief Justice had breached any law or made statements that were untrue.

“Is it not the truth that some of these state institutions are performing better? Come on, just look at the data. What are you talking about? I mean, the data speaks for itself. It is a fact. Did he lie? I mean, did he lie?” he asked.

Cudjoe said there was nothing wrong with the Chief Justice expressing an opinion on public matters, particularly as his comments were made during an official engagement where he had been presented with information on the performance of state institutions.

“Everybody has an opinion. Nobody is suggesting to the Chief Justice that he can’t speak on any public matter,” he said.

Retract political comments or resign - NPP to Chief Justice

According to him, the Chief Justice had been presented with comparative information on the performance of state institutions under previous and current administrations before making his observations.

Cudjoe consequently rejected claims that the comments undermined the neutrality of the Judiciary.

“I don’t see anything wrong with it. I don’t see why people are thinking that it is political,” he said.

The debate follows comments by Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie during a visit to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The Chief Justice praised the performance of MIIF and other public institutions under the current administration, saying some of the developments he had witnessed had left him wondering what Ghana had been doing over the past eight years.
