Customs Officers are sent back to factories

Following the demise of the Value Added Tax suystem in Ghana, the Custom, Excise and Preventive Services (CEPS) is sending back customs officers to the various factories it withdrew from when the Value Added Tax (VAT) came into force last March.

In an interview with the acting Commissioner for CEPS, Mr. Issac Ewum-Tohma, he said sustantial number of the estimated 200 staff will be at post by 26 June 1995.

The service is to hold a special meeting with manufacturers next Wednesday to discuss the effect of sales tax on prices following the withdrawal of the VAT.

Last weekend the service issued directives to importers, regional and district offices to acquiant themselves with the provisions of the CEPS Management Amendment Bill

Parliament repealed the VAT Law on June 13 under certificate of urgency when when it passed the Sales and Service Tax Bill - CEPS Management Amendment Bill.
