The Czech Republic financed in 2019 a project “Education is a Right” within the framework of the Czech Development Cooperation.
The goal of the project was to provide stable access to education through construction of two new school blocks of three classrooms for the deprived communities of Weila in the Bono East Region and Onaa in the Ashanti Region.
The solemn inauguration of both schools in November 2019 was attended by Chargé d´affaires Lukas Kindl.
The project was implemented from February to October 2019 by the “Student Business Organization for Sustainable Development”, a local NGO.
Members of the communities also participated in the construction process by providing labor and natural construction materials.
In Weila, Bono East, the capacity of the previous building didn´t match the number of pupils.
Thus, some classes had to be held under a tree, which made the education dependent on weather.
In Onaa, Ashanti, a standing school building was completely missing.
The construction of new schools will help solve the problem with the placement of teachers, who were previously often rejecting postings in these communities due to the missing infrastructure,
The solemn opening in both communities was attended by Chargé d´affaires Lukas Kindl, the project team, traditional leaders, members of the district assemblies and most of the local inhabitants.
“No child should be deprived of education because of a missing infrastructure,” Mr. Kindl stated in his speech and underscored that investment in the education of children is the best investment for future development. He also called on the local communities to commit to sustainability of the project.
