The Graphic in its lead story on the front page reports that a devastating tidal floods which swept through Horvi in the Ketu District of the Volta Region, has rendered 458 people homeless. It says no casualty was recorded in the incident which occurred last Monday, however, virtually all human activities, especially fishing, the main occupation of the people, have come to a halt. People can only move about in canoes. Meanwhile the displaced people are putting up with relatives and friends in the surrounding villages. The Vice-President, Prof. J.E.A. Mills visited the area yesterday to acquaint himself with the community and find out what could be done to mitigate the plight of the people. GRI
"Don't resurrect ethnic conflict - President", is another front page story which says President Jerry John Rawlings has warned those trying to ressurect ethnic conflicts in the Northern Region to be wary of their actions. He said the government would not sit by for a few individuals or group of people to foment trouble to the detriment of development. President Rawling, the Graphic says, was reacting to the assertion by the Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Gilbert Iddi that information reaching the Regional Security Council indicates that some people were trying to foment in some parts of the region. President Rawlings is in the region to re-launch the gunieaworm eradication programme and to whip up enthusiasm in the Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM) immunisation exercise. GRI
The Graphic reports in its centre spread that a contingent of about 100 police personnel from the Greater Accra Regional Police Command yesterday carried out a special exercise in the metropolis as part of efforts to clamp down on dealers in stolen items. Under the heading: "Police mount special exercise in Accra", the Graphic says the contingent drawn from the various districts and the Panther Unit, seized many items suspected to have been stolen and were being sold to unsuspecting members of the public in some stores and stalls. The paper says the exercise forms part of the phase two of the contingency plan by the Police Administration to curb criminal activities in the country, adding that the exercise will be extended to the other regions. The items seized included used television sets, video decks, tape recorders, car tapes, amplifiers, electric irons, sewing machines, gas cylinders speakers and vehicle parts. GRI
In a back page story the Graphic reports that the Volta Regional Minister, Lt-Col Charles Agbenaza (rtd), has suspended the endorsement of certificate for payment to a contractor who worked on portions of the Jasikan-Dambai road. The Regional Minister said though the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has recommended the contractor for payment, his tour of the area revealed that work done leaves much to be desired. The Graphic says the contractor and the contract money involved are not immediately known. GRi
