Accra, July 8, GNA - The Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) on Tuesday presented two Nissan double cabin pick-ups valued at 42,000 dollars to the Dangme East and West districts to monitor the transport sector programme in the districts. The donation, which is the third in the series, was solely funded by the Danish Government and has also benefited the Volta and Northern regions.
Sheikh Ibrahim Cudjoe Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister, said the presentation was a clear demonstration of DANIDA's commitment as a development partner to help Ghana advance its decentralization programme.
He said the transport sector programme support was in line with both the government framework for poverty reduction as outlined in the Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy and Road Sector Programme. The basic objective of the programme, Sheikh Quaye said, was to set up the District Works Department to lead the districts in the provision of social facilities for the rural poor.
He expressed appreciation to DANIDA for its continuous support and gave the assurance that the Greater Accra Coordinating Council would give its fullest cooperation and support to any programme in whatever way possible for its success in the region.
Nana Agyekum Dwamena, Chairman of the National Steering Committee, Transport Sector Programme Support, Phase Two, said the sector was also raising an amount of 100 million dollars to support 30 districts in the area of infrastructure.
He said the transport sector programme support was still on-going.
