DCE wins NPP Wulensi constituency primaries

Wulensi (N/R), May 10, GNA- Mr Thomas Donkor Okaja, District Chief Executive (DCE), for Nanumba South, has been elected to contest the Wulensi constituency parliamentary seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2008 Election.

He had 54 votes of the 76 total valid ballot cast to beat the three other contenders in an election conducted by the Electoral Commission on Thursday at Wulensi.

Mr Abdulai Wumbei, a tutor at the Tamale Polytechnic had 12 votes, Mr Alhassan Mesuna, an Information Officer, had 9 votes while Mr Jonathan Brukum Karim got one vote.

Mr Karim Wumbei, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Wulensi stepped down from the contest. Mr Okaja thanked the delegates for electing his as the NPP parliamentary candidate for the area urged them to rally behind him to enable the party to retain the seat. He said the December elections would be the toughest in Ghana's history and advised party members not to be complacent but to tell Ghanaians about the good works of the NPP. Mr Okaja appealed party members in the constituency draw lessons from the party's national delegates' congress to elect NPP flag bearer where all presidential aspirants become united after Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Addo won the contest. Mr Okaja asked the people to support him towards the development of the area.

He said government policies such as the National Health Insurance and the National Youth Employment Programme, were helping to alleviate the plight of Ghanaians and gave the assurance that the NPP would do more to improve upon the lives of the people if its mandate was renewed. Mr Okaja promised to run a transparent administration if voted for as MP for the area. All the defeated candidates promised to help him retain the seat by.
