Nkawie (Ash), June 25, GNA - The Atwima-Nwabiagya District Education Directorate has supplied 215 dual-desks and 100 teachers' tables and chairs worth 73 million cedis to 20 primary schools in the district. The directorate has also supplied 40 teachers' cupboards to 10 other primary schools at the cost of 26 million cedis.

Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, the District Director of Education, who told the Ghana News Agency at Nkawie on Friday, said they were bought from part of the first part of the 240.9 million cedis released to the directorate by the Department for International Development (DFID) of Britain, under its Education Service Support Programme (ESSP). He said the directorate has rehabilitated five identified deplorable primary school blocks at the cost of 39.8 million cedis.

Mr Obeng-Darko said 100 brilliant but needy pupils were provided with school uniforms, bags, exercise books, pens, pencils, rulers and erasers, while 76 Whole School Development (WSD) schools were supported to organise cluster-based insets for the teachers. He said a three-day non-residential workshop has also been organised for lower primary school teachers in the use of the harmonised primary school teachers materials in the teaching of mathematics, reading, English language, science and environmental studies, while 115 school Guidance and Counselling Co-ordinators were trained.

Under the School Health Education Programme (SHEP), he said the directorate dewormed over 5,000 pupils and provided first aid drugs to all basic schools in the district. Mr Obeng-Darko said funds from DFID would be judiciously utilised to enhance access and retention of pupils, as well as community participation in educational development.
