Accra, Dec. 07, GNA - The Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) on Friday joined millions of Ghanaians to commemorate the 23rd National Farmers Day with a call on government to provide targeted subsidies to agriculture.
"As we celebrate the day, DFP's position that, in addition to awarding the farmers and fishermen, the issues of providing subsidies to targeted areas in agriculture are revisited if we want to develop quickly as a nation," DFP stated in a release signed by Mr. Bede A. Ziedeng, a Deputy General Secretary to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
The statement said providing subsidies is still central to the overall increment in agricultural production, poverty reduction and for the attainment of the middle-income status.
The statement said DFP recognised the immerse contribution of the nation's farmers and fishermen to the overall development of the nation as agriculture continues to provide about 35 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product growth.
Its in view of these contributions that we say "ayekoo" to our gallant farmers and fishermen on the occasion of 23rd National Farmers day celebration; "we congratulate the award winners, whilst we encourage those who were unable to win any awards this year to continue the hard work as their labour would never be in vain."
