DOMOD institutes 250 million cedis education fund

Dompim-Pepesa (W/R), March 27, GNA- The DOMOD Aluminium Company Limited has instituted a 250 million cedis education fund for the people of Dompim-Pepesa near Tarkwa to supplement efforts of the Government to provide quality education for the people.

It would be used to support hardworking but needy children as well as provide incentives to teachers, parents and guardians who encourage their wards to excel in examinations.

The company has provided a 150-million cedis library, reasonably stocked with books and a 21-inch TV set, as part of the fund to inculcate the habit of reading among students and the public.

The first of the three components of the fund would be the scholarship awards and incentive scheme, under which 100 million cedis had been set aside as seed money for the first ten-year period, renewable on satisfactory performance.

Under the scheme, three students, including at least a girl would be catered for through the Senior Secondary at two million cedis per student annually.

Hard working teachers, parents and guardians who encourage their wards to obtain high grades would also be honoured under the scheme. Mr. Samuel Kwofie, Chief Executive of DOMOD in a speech to launch the fund and inauguration the library at Dompim-Pepesa on Friday, explained that the fund is community-based and the people should support it to ensure its sustenance.

Mr Kwofie urged the people to make the best use of the library and use the TV set to access the Presidential Special Initiative (PSI) on distance learning broadcast on GTV.

Mr. Joseph Eric Jaine, Western Regional co-ordinating director launched the fund on behalf of the Regional Minister Mr. Joseph Boahen Aidoo. He commended Mr. Kwofie and DOMOD for the gesture and appealed to other well- meaning citizens and institutions to emulate them.

Mr. Jaine urged parents to give priority attention to the education of their wards since it is the invaluable legacy they could bequeath to them. Mr. Kobina Taylor, Deputy Regional Director of education noted that, education is a powerful weapon that could be used to reduce poverty and "Every community that recognises this, is on the correct path to uproot poverty from its midst".

Osagyefo Kwamena Enimil VI, Omanhene of Wassa Fiase Traditional area who presided advised the people to stop engaging in Galamsey at the expense of education.

Nana Kofi Yankson, English and Science teacher of the Dompim-Pepesa Junior Secondary School was provided with an award for being adjudged the best teacher in the area during the 2002/2003 academic Year. More than 12 million cedis were realised in appeal for funds in aid of the fund.
