DPP endorses Prof Mills

THE Democratic People’s Party (DPP) has endorsed Professor J.E. Atta Mills as the flagbearer of the Progressive Alliance for the December 7 elections.

The party also unanimously endorsed the selection of Mr Martin Alamisi Amidu as the running mate to Professor Mills.

This was contained in a resolution at the Extraordinary National Delegates Meeting of the party in Accra yesterday.

As early as 7 a.m., about 800 party delegates, supporters and sympathisers clad in party “T” shirts arrived in buses at the Local Government Training School Auditorium at Madina amidst drumming and dancing.

The playing of the party’s anthem by Jewels Ackah’s Butterfly Six, opened the business for the day.

The chairman of the party, Mr Dan Markin commended Professor Mills and Mr Amidu for their decision in accepting the challenge and for their endorsement as Presidential candidates for the Progressive Alliance.

He gave the assurance that the Progressive Alliance led by the Professor Mills will win the December elections to continue its good work and urged the people to vote massively for the alliance.

“We know Prof. Mills will no longer be the Vice-president but President of Ghana, to continue the good work started by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and continued, consolidated and expanded by Flt. Lt. J. J. Rawlings,” he said.

He called on the opposition parties to play their politics in truth and honesty or remain silent if they do not have anything to tell the electorates.

Mr Markins described as unfortunate a statement attributed to the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr J. A. Kufuor at their recent rally at Ho, that the NDC dips its hands in the national coffers to enrich its members and asked him to substantiate the statement or be dragged to court.

“We call on Mr Kufuor to retract his statement, else we dare him to come out with facts or we will be compelled within one week to seek redress from the court on the grounds of lying or perjury,” he said.

Mr Markins reiterated the party’s belief in peace and unity adding that “ this is reflected in our party’s symbol of rainbow and the dove.”

He said the DPP intends to be one of the strongest parties in the country and called on members to embrace this and work towards achieving it.

The General Secretary of the DPP, Mr Lawrence Xornu said the party has channelled its own identity within the family of the Great Alliance and called on its supporters to remain faithful to it.

There were solidarity messages from the National Democratic Congress, (NDC), Egle, Veranda Boys and Girls Club, and the 31st December Women’s Movement.
