Former Presidential Press Secretary, Andrew Awuni has observed that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has always been a centre of extortion in the country.

He described the recent charges of controversial GH¢108 for First Aid kits as a dangerous trend considering the fact the Transport Ministry and Board of DVLA claims it is not aware of the of the development.

According to the Founder of the Centre for Freedom and Accuracy it is always in the habit of the DVLA to introduce all forms of stickers now and then used as a conduit to extort monies from drivers

“New methods to extort the people are always introduced with every new government and commercial drivers bear the brunt the most. All kinds of stickers of different colours are introduced every now and then and drivers are forced to buy. It looks like there is no one to protect the people from this daylight robbery”

Mr Awuni who described the development as daylight robbery, wants President Akufo-Addo to shut down some power centres in his government before this trend goes too far.

“Authority can be delegated but let there be ONLY ONE source of Power”

The new year is only four days old and already many funny things are happening. First it was the introduction of special courts for tv license defaulters. The Ministry of Information (government) said they were not aware of the move. Then we woke up this morning to another levy from the DVLA: Ghc108.00 for a cumplusory First Aid Box. Again the Ministry of Transport says they were not consulted. What is happening? This trend is dangerous. That government agencies can independently take such far reaching policy actions with such massive impact on society without recourse to their Ministries is new and dangerous. As for the DVLA it has for a longtime being the centre for all forms of extortion. New methods to extort the people are always introduced with every new government and commercial drivers bear the brunt the most. All kinds of stickers of different colours are introduced every now and then and drivers are forced to buy. It looks like there is no one to protect the people from this daylight robbery. Sad!!! Can I profer some advice here? The President will have to shut down some power centres in his government before this trend goes too far. Authority can be delegated but let there be ONLY ONE source of Power. This “we were not consulted” excuse cannot continue.
