DVLA now a sub-vented organisation

Takoradi, May 29,- GNA- The Ministry of Finance has given approval for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to become a government sub-vented organisation to enhance its operations. Mr. Joe Osei-Owusu, Chief Executive Officer of the Authority who announced this said DVLA would take full advantage of its new status to upgrade its services to international standards.

He was addressing a general meeting of Regional and District Officers of the Authority at Takoradi on Saturday to review their performances and plan strategies for sustainable growth.

Mr. Osei-Owusu said with its new status, DVLA would be in a position to equip its offices with modern machinery and equipment and said the World Bank is financing the computerisation of its operations. DANIDA is funding a training programme for officers of the Authority to upgrade their skills in both written and in-traffic tests.

He said DVLA has launched a new "L" plate and identification plate and advised regional and district officers to implement them.

Mr. Osei-Owusu described the findings of a recent customer survey conducted by the Authority as "disappointing" and urged personnel of the DVLA to work hard to improve customer service delivery.

He said management is working to solve problems facing most of its offices, which included lack of office accommodation and spatial constraints at Accra and Tema.

Mr. George Ackom, Director of Vehicle Inspection and Registration mentioned some of the methods being used by smugglers to outwit officers of the DVLA.

He advised them to contact DVLA headquarters to verify suspicious documents submitted for vehicle registration.
