Dagbon: Don't panic over U.S. warning – Asante

The Chairman of the National Peace Council (NPC), Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, has said the alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in Ghana to all its citizens cautioning them against travelling to Yendi from Friday, should not create fear and panic among Ghanaians.

The Embassy warned its citizens, particularly embassy personnel against travelling to Tamale, Yendi and surrounding villages ahead of the final funeral rites to be held for Ya Na Mahamudu Abudulai.

The alert warned that “extreme violence is likely and there are inadequate medical resources in the region.”

“All but mission-essential travel by U.S. Embassy personnel to these regions is not advisable until the issue is resolved. Our ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these areas is extremely limited.”

However, Rev Prof Asante told Accra100.5FM’s Ghana Yensom on Thursday, 13 December 2018 that the warning by the embassy is a mere routine.

He told show host Kwabena Prah Jnr. (The Don) that: “This is a normal routine activity that normally embassies should do because the area is a hot spot. The Americans do that all the time, even during elections. Their caution does not mean we should fear that there will be chaos in Dagbon again on Friday”.

“Whether or not we will succeed with the peace process depends on our brothers and sisters in Dagbon and all other Ghanaians, but let’s commend them for the role they are playing in the peace process.”
