Nana Akufo-Addo, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, on Tuesday said detained suspects of the unsolved Dagbon murders would face trial as soon as the criminal assizes open in a few weeks time.
Iddrisu Jahinfo and Idana Sugri are to be tried for the murder of the Ya-Na Yakubu Andani, II the second, which occurred in early March 2002. The Minister who was responding to the concerns raised by the Minority on government's white paper on the Wuaku Commission and the State of Emergency in Dagbon, said the search for culprits has not been abandoned by government.
"The doors of justice are not closed by the conclusions of the Wuaku Commission. It would be opened until all those responsible are dealt with." He said as the Chief Law Officer of government, he has the sole right to initiate prosecution and that he could go beyond the Commission recommendations to search for more culprits.
Nana Akufo-Addo said government is neutral in the Dagbon crisis and would endeavour to remain so. "Once elected to form the government of the Republic, we are bound to treat all Ghanaians as equals in spite of individual opinions on issues."
Dr Kwabena Adjei, NDC-Biakoye, said government cannot say it is neutral in the crises when some of its agents are perceived to be involved in the crises. He asked government to "look within the country and seek counsel on the issue."
Papa Owusu Ankoma, Majority Leader, said government would pursue other measures to bring about peace in the Dagbon Traditional area. "When Dagbon is not at peace, the whole country is not at peace," he said.
