A form two General Arts female boarding student of the Damongo Senior High School in the Northern region has suffered complications after she allegedly attempted to illegally terminate her nearly six months old pregnancy while in school.
School authorities were not aware of the incident until doctors at the Damongo hospital reported to them.
Friends of the student had secretly transported her in a hired tricycle to the hospital for treatment on Saturday night when she complained bitterly about severe bouts of stomach cramps or pains.
Midway into the journey, the student started to struggle with pains and later delivered a stillborn fetus which resulted in the complications.
Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors there refused to admit the student until they got permission from the school authorities. After deliberations, the friends who took her to the hospital agreed for the doctors to contact the school management about the matter.
A senior management member of the school who refused to be named confirmed the report to Starr News. He said the student was later admitted and treated after authorities were made aware of the “emergency” matter.
School authorities have informed parents of the student, according to the staff, and the student has been taken home for further treatment.
He disclosed that a disciplinary committee meeting had been held over the matter and the student would face punishment when she returns.
The Damongo Senior High School has consistently been grabbing negative headlines in the last two years. In 2017, some seven students were indefinitely suspended after they were allegedly caught engaging in immoral acts.
And in this year, only some two months ago, the headmaster burnt some 300 mobile phones belonging to students after an overnight raid in dormitories.
