Dampoase accident: 29 corpses identified

Bodies of 29 persons of the 35 who died in the Dompoase road crash last Tuesday have been identified by the families, according to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

The gory accident which occurred around midnight on Monday, January 13 involved two buses, one said to be traveling from Takoradi to Accra – with registration number GR 5704-18 – and the other – with registration number GN 3780-10 – in the opposite direction.

Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, while addressing the Ministers of Transport and Roads and Highways who visited the hospital to follow up said,

“Out of the 35 bodies, 29 have gone through the process of identification and a good number of them have been released to their families.”

Eric Kofi Gyedu revealed that some of the patients on admission still need to undergo major surgery.

Four out of the six men on admission and some women out of the nine who are on admission.

Mr, Gyedu expressed hope that “we will be able to contain the rest of the situation and come out of this very successfully.”

Meanwhile, a driver of one of the buses involved, Mark Mireku, has been remanded into police custody.

The National Road Safety Authority is investigating the crash and has said its “multi-disciplinary” investigations are expected to inform the next line of “remedial actions and measures” to prevent future instances of such road crashes.

The Road Safety Authority also disclosed that plans are in place to efficiently regulate the operations of commercial road transport organisations.
