Danish Teachers Union donates to Schools in Ghana

Apraponsu (W/R) April 16, GNA - The Teachers Union of Copenhagen City in Denmark on Saturday donated school items worth millions of cedis to two deprived schools in the Mpohor Wassa East District of the Western Region.

The items which include: Slates, Exercise Books, English Course Books for Primary and Junior Secondary Schools, Pens, Jotters, Skipping ropes, toys, and other kit for games, were presented to Apraponso and Bomba schools.

The items were presented on behalf of the Union by a three-man teachers delegation from Denmark who were paying a ten-day working visit to the country to understudy the educational system and develop inter-school relationship between schools in the two countries. The teachers are Mrs Ulla-Britt Sabroe, Mr Birger Madsen and Ms Cathrine Madsen.

Presenting the items, Mrs Sabroe stressed the need for pupils to pursue academic excellence alongside discipline in order to equip themselves well for their future roles as leaders.

She said, "a window of opportunity exists for only those who are enlightened, morally strong and smart."

Mrs. Sabroe encouraged parents to forgo some of their pleasures and instead, invest in their wards education, "because such wise sacrifices would ensure the future well-being of your children". Mr Madsen entreated teachers not to relent in their efforts to inculcate into students good moral behaviour and hard work by being role models.

He noted with admiration, the efforts of Nana Ekua Bri II, Chief of Apraponso who initiated the linkage between the schools and the Copenhagen Teachers Union to enhance academic work in the school. He said excellent co-operation between school administration in Copenhagen and Nana Ekua Bri, who is also a member of the Copenhagen City Council has resulted in high interest of the union to assist schools in Ghana, especially at Apraponso and Bomba

According to him, the association has initiated a programme to provide other logistics, study tour of Danish students and Teachers and other interactive platforms for studies.

Mr Edward Tawiah Amprofi, Mpohor Wassa East District Chief Executive received the items on behalf of the schools and handed them over to the head teachers of the beneficiary schools.

Mr Ibrahim Essiam a head teacher on behalf of the beneficiary schools expressed gratitude to the Teachers Union of Copenhagen, the Mayor of Education for Copenhagen City, Mr Per Bregent Gaard and Nana Bri, Chief of Apraponso for the donation and said it would be used judiciously.

He mentioned a number of needs, which, if obtained, would enhance education in the district especially at the two schools, which he described as most deprived in the whole country.

These include the building of modern school block/administration/library complex.

Nana Ekua Bri II, during her estoolment as the Chief of Apraponso last year established an Educational Endowment Fund, which has received greater support from the Danish Embassy in Accra and the Copenhagen Teachers Union.

Nana Bri also known as Ms Anna Ekua Saakwa a member of the Copenhagen City Council in her inaugural speech outlined the programme for a 100 Million Educational Endowment Fund to assist brilliant but needy children in the community to further their education.

The scheme would be her contribution towards the development of education as well as complement the efforts of parents at providing quality education to their children. 16 April 05
