David Addy aims high after U-20 World Cup triumph

2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup winning star David Addy says there are sterner challenges ahead in his budding soccer career. The flying left wing-back has therefore pledged to put behind him the joy and glory of taking the podium in Egypt as part of Africa’s first ever FIFA Youth tournament winners. “Football is time, you know and if it’s my time God will lift me up, it’s up to nature and the Almighty. I am hoping the victory at the World Cup enhances my career because this is just the beginning. There is a long way to go and it will be very difficult but I will work harder,” Addy stated in a chat from his Denmark base.

Addy did tremendously well for the Black Satellites on the left combining defensive duties with efficient attacking displays more like a certain Roberto Carlos as much as some Patrice Evra.

The left back position is one that has remained a void within the Black Stars for years with many a candidate failing to seal the spot. Six members of the U-20 World Cup winning squad earned call-ups into the senior national team for the games against Mali and Angola but conspicuously missing was David Addy. The tall mercurial defender refuses to be drawn into any Black Stars debates but is he ready to tie down the Black Stars left back slot for good? Addy dismisses any argument on readiness since he played alongside the likes of latest Black Stars prodigy Emmanuel Agyemang Badu in the U-20. But he recognizes the fact that all national team call-ups are on merit.

“I will not go into that. I don’t know but I think the coach knows who is best for that position. I am playing my football and it’s the coach’s decision (to make a call-up) not mine,” he said.

David Addy has meanwhile hailed the rewards and incentives given to the heroic players and officials of the Black Satellites by the government and people of Ghana. He indicated that it was a step in the right direction and one which will motivate many other Ghanaians to also die for the country.

Currently back in the business with Randers in the Danish League, the former player of Wa All Stars hopes for a switch of clubs soon. But Addy’s focus is now fully concentrated on the task of helping his club rise up the league table in what has been a struggling start to the new season.
