Deal with coronavirus and stop self-adulation - Minority to govt

Minority MPs have admonished the government to stop engaging in self-glorification and rather put in place stringent measures to halt the spread of the deadly COVID-19.

The Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu who was in Parliament to brief the House about two Public health emergencies; meningitis and coronavirus cited commendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and an opinion post in the Washington post regarding the country’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He went further to use the commendations to pat the Nana Addo administration on the back.

But the NDC MPs hit out at the Minister accusing him of engaging in self-adulation.

The Deputy ranking member for the Health Committee Robert Kuganab-Lem questioned the basis upon which government announced that the country’s cases had peaked arguing the development creates room for all other figures including recoveries to be doubted.

Minority chief whip Muntaka Mubarak further lashed out at the speechwriters of the president for what he termed an embarrassment to the nation with a claim Ghana is leading the continent with testing figures which turned out to be false.

The Asawase MP also attacked the Health Minister whose public pronouncements he argued have been counterproductive. He further accused him of engaging praise-singing and self-glorification when human lives are being lost.

“You want others to come and praise you, you want someone to come and tell you that you are doing well? watch what others are doing. Stop this unnecessary thing of trying to praise yourselves and deal with the challenge.

“Mr Speaker, you claim that you are fifth in the world but your people are still dying and you simply say the rate of death is small…so if you say the rate of death is small so we are congratulating ourselves, no every death is death,” Muntaka said Tuesday in Parliament.

But a visibly emotional Agyeman Manu in a reaction wondered what exactly the NDC MPs want from Government regarding the Covid-19 fight.

According to him, the government is doing everything right to ensure the battle is won based on advice from health experts.

Meanwhile, Ghana on Tuesday recorded 183 more cases of COVID-19 taking the country’s case count to 5,918, according to latest figures released by the Ghana Health Service.

Two more people have been confirmed dead from the deadly virus taking the death toll to 31. There have been no new recoveries as the number still stands at 1,754.
