Former President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufour, is of the view that the decision of the four Parliamentary candidates to contest in the 2024 election cannot amount to cross-carpeting.

He is of the view that their decision does not affect the current Parliament and so should not have caused the current standoff that Ghana’s Parliament is experiencing.

“For me, the four people who have decided to go independent do not amount to cross-carpeting. Their decision does not affect the current Parliament but rather the next parliament after this one,” he said.

He continued, “So I don’t understand how this led to the issues ending up in the Supreme Court. But for me, since the speaker says he has not made any ruling, he should ensure that Parliament reverts to how it was before the issues so that we can complete this term successfully.

There is an impending election, and the people of Ghana will choose who they want to lead the country and the people to steer the affairs in Parliament, so there is no need for these tactics. I will urge the speaker to come out and be clear that he has not made any ruling or any declaration so that we can end this. If the people of Ghana decide the party which they want to be the Majority, they can decide. This will pave the way for the President to address the nation and approve whatever bill there is, among others,” he said.
