After failing in her bid to snatch the Wa Central Parliamentary seat from the NDC for the second time, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary candidate, Hajia Humu Awudu, has issued a congratulatory message to the Member of Parliament, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, on his victory.

Thanking the Almighty for the favours she has enjoyed thus far in her bid to represent the constituents, she graciously congratulated Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo for retaining the seat to continue serving the people for the sixth time running.

"I wish to thank the Almighty Allah for giving me the life and strength to have come this far in my quest to represent my people in Parliament.

"Congratulations to Dr. Rashid Hassan Pelpuo on your emergence as the winner in the 2024 Parliamentary election for Wa Central Constituency, and I wish you success in representing Wa Central for the 6th time," she stated.

She said this via a post on her Facebook page on December 9, 2024.

While admitting the choice of the people as destined by the Almighty God, she noted that the constituency is still yearning for liberation due to the "slow pace of development and lack of human development" for the constituents.

"The voice of the people is the voice of Allah, and I still believe there is a lot of work needed to be done to liberate Wa Central from slow-paced development and lack of human development for our mothers and youth," she intimated.

She commended all stakeholders for the various roles they played in helping her campaign, ensuring her victory, which unfortunately eluded her yet again.

She said: "I wish to use this opportunity to thank my family, especially my husband, for his unflinching support, the leadership of the government, constituency and regional executives, and the members of our campaign, NPP members, our brothers and sisters in the NDC, our mothers, and their teaming youth for their support throughout the campaign period.

"I wish to extend special appreciation to my brother, Tahiru Issahaku Moomin, Wa Mayor, for his priceless support. May Allah richly bless everyone and replenish their efforts."

Hajia Humu expressed her optimism that the Wa Central constituents would remain united, citing the proverbial adage in the local Waale dialect that goes as, 'Tijaabunyeni,' to wit, "we are all one people."

Meanwhile, our checks with the MP through the Constituency Communications Officer indicated that Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo was yet to receive any official congratulatory message from her or a phone call to that effect.

The MP, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, obtained 38,579 (55.36%) out of 69,684 total valid votes cast, with Humu Awudu polling 30,724 (44.09%) of the valid votes cast, losing out to the incumbent MP by a margin of 7,855 votes, an increase in margin difference from 2020, which was 6,202.

Yakubu Zakaria of PNC also secured 249 (0.35%) of the votes, whereas the Independent candidate, Rasheed Saeed, managed 132 (0.18%) of the ballots cast.

A total of 678 rejected ballots were recorded, representing 0.96% of the total votes cast of 70,362.

The poll, which went on smoothly without major incidents, coupled with adequate security protection, took place at 219 polling centers across the constituency.

Although Humu Awudu has failed in her second successive attempt to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament, the percentage of votes she garnered in both the 2020 and 2024 elections exceeded what the Presidential candidates could obtain in the elections.

While President Akufo-Addo polled 32.57% of the votes in Wa Central Constituency in the 2020 Presidential elections, the Parliamentary Candidate, Humu Awudu, was able to secure 45.43% of the valid votes cast.

Also, in the 2024 elections, whereas the Parliamentary Candidate obtained 44.09% of the total valid votes cast in the parliamentary polls, the Vice President and NPP's candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, could only manage 25.2% of the valid votes, a lesser percentage than Humu Awudu's.

Wa Central Constituency has been a safe constituency for the NDC that has never been won by the NPP.

The closest the NPP came to winning the seat was in 2016 when the current Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Issahaku Tahiru Moomin, lost it by a whisker to the incumbent MP with just a margin of 571 votes.
