Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has challenged the youth to be bold to demand accountability from their leaders.
He said they must also stand up for the truth as well as their rights as citizens of Ghana.
Ex-President Kufuor said this when the executive and members of the Young Adult Fellowship (YAF) of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Nantoma Congregation, Kanda, visited him at his residence in Accra.
The visit was to show their appreciation to the former President for sending his spokesperson to represent him during the YAF Sixth Anniversary Celebration.
The group also presented a citation to former President Kufuor for honouring their invitation.
Ex-President Kufuor said, for somebody to become a good leader, he or she must be disciplined and show fellow feeling to the people he wanted to lead.
“A leader must have followers, and if that leader does not have the spirit of fellow feeling towards the people, then he is not worth being a leader,” he said.
Former President Kufuor bemoaned the current economic hardship in the country, adding that Ghanaians needed to blame themselves and not providence.
He said the country had been blessed with so many natural resources including beautiful lands.
Former President Kufuor commended the church for its enormous contribution towards the development of the country and that Ghana would not have been where she is today without its support in terms of education.
He said the Presbyterian Church had contributed its fair quota towards the development of the nation and that anybody who had associated with the Presbyterian education system would readily say that the church had always insisted on sound moral nurturing and discipline.
“As I sit here, I owe the Presbyterian Church some debt in the sense that the secondary school I attended was fostered and sponsored by both the Methodist and the Presbyterian Churches. So I see myself as a product of the church” he said.
Mr Eric Dartey, President of YAF, praised former President Kufuor for his generous cash donation to the group during the sixth anniversary celebration, as well as the pieces of advice he gave them through his spokesperson.
He said the group was proud that the former President still allowed himself to be used by the international community to build democratic institutions in other parts of the world.
“Your contribution to the development of our nation Ghana and to the international community speaks volumes about the type of person you are,” he said.
