The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has called for the demolition of the Tema Newtown Police Station because its structural defects made it a vicious death trap for personnel and cell inmates.

The Police Station located near the Kplejoo tsoshishi, had not seen any major rehabilitation since it was built in the 1960s, leading to visible numerous structural cracks in the walls, beams and floor.

Mr Ebenezer Cudjoe, Tema Metropolitan Director of NADMO, revealed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Wednesday.

Mr Cudjoe noted that his outfit assessed the structure and found it dangerous therefore calling for its destruction to save lives.

He added that Mr Felix Mensah Anang-La, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive was working on the provision of a container structure for the personnel to move their operations in to make way for the demolition of the police station.

In a related development, the NADMO team had evacuated traders from a one storey-building, which had developed serious major structural defects, located at the Manhean market.

He said his outfit received complaints from the traders on the state of the building which contained 24 shops made up of 16 on the ground floor and eight on the top floor.

Mr Cudjoe stated that the building which was constructed about five years ago for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) had its suspending floor falling off, tiles peeling off, structural cracks, among others.

He noted that after a visual assessment by his team, they decided to evacuate the traders from the building and cordoned it off while awaiting a detailed structural integrity assessment before a decision would be made for its demolition or otherwise.

He added that “we dug the floor and noticed that the concrete was full of sand, there was not enough cement in the concrete”.
