Mr Justice Samuel Adjei, the Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, on Friday called for religious tolerance among Christians and Moslems to sustain national peace and social cohesion.

He emphasised that Christians and Muslims served and worshipped one God, who is an embodiment of peace and, therefore, entreated the two religious organisations to tolerate each other for unity and progress in the society.

Mr Adjei made the call when he addressed leaders of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church, and the Muslim community at a reconciliation durbar at Atebubu following a misunderstanding between the two religious groups two weeks ago

He explained that the Brong-Ahafo Regional Security Council (REGSEC) had been able to resolve the conflict between the two organisations, and commended the leaders for the maturity they exhibited during the peace process.

Mr Adjei expressed appreciation to the REGSEC, the Atebubu Traditional Council and the security agencies at Atebubu for their support which had brought peace and tranquility in the town.

Mr Owusu Boateng, Atebubu/Amantin District Chief Executive, said without peace, it would be difficult for the assembly to execute development projects in the district.

He, however, lamented that the assembly had to spend huge sums of monies that could have been channeled into development projects, in maintaining law and order whenever there was a conflict.

Mr Boateng expressed optimism that the peace accord signed by the two religious groups would be strengthened and lasted for ever.

Last two weeks, a misunderstanding erupted between the SDA Church and the Muslim community at Atebubu and in the process, some young men burnt down a mission house belonging to the church.

Through efforts by the REGSEC, the leadership of the two religious bodies signed a peace accord to end the protracted land dispute, which nearly turned bloody among the Christians and the Muslims.
