Deploy military to enforce social distancing in markets – Akufo-Addo urged

The Chairman for Kantamanto Used Cloth Sellers Association in the Greater Accra Region, Evans Ofori, has called on government to urgently deploy the military to monitor and enforce the social distancing protocol at market places.

His call comes in the wake of how the general public has ignored social distancing at market places after government lifted the partial lockdown.

Evans Ofori made the call while speaking to Onua 95.1 FM in an interview and cautioned if care is not taken, Ghana could awfully be affected or hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He wants government to charge metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to strictly observe and enforce all the precautionary measures put across by Ghana Health Service (GHS) at market places and lorry stations in the country to help contain community spread of the novel coronavirus.

Evans Ofori observed that he was alarmed and startled to see how people are crowded at CMB, Rawlings Park and UTC as if the pandemic is no longer real in the country.

He appealed to President Nana Akufo-Addo to as matter of urgency consider the closure of all markets to avoid escalation of Ghana’s case count.

So far, 1,154 cases have been recorded with 120 full recoveries. Nine persons have died.

Touching on efforts made by the leadership of Kantamanto market to curb the spread, Evans Ofori revealed that enough Veronica buckets have been provided at vantage points and have consistently been educating the traders to observe social-distancing and other protocols.

Evans Ofori was quick to reiterate his call on stall owners in the market to duly comply with the precautionary measures or face total closure of the market by the city authorities.
