Twa (C/R), Dec. 24, GNA – Dr Hannah Louisa Bissiw, Deputy Minister of Water Resource, Works and Housing, on Saturday inaugurated an ultra-modern water project at Twa near Mankessim in the Mfantiman East District in the Central Region. The GHC 500, 000 project was initiated by the Ministry and funded by NEDAP/MELPOOL Technology in partnership with KSB Company. It formed part of Government’s ‘Better Ghana Agenda’, to solve water problems in the country.
Twa community depended on unsafe water, which had led to bacterial and protozoal diarrhea and typhoid fever among other chronic diseases. The people for a long time have relied on water from River Okyenakwaa, and women and children woke up around 0400 hours every day and walked approximately 1.3km to fetch water from the river, resulting in some children absenting themselves from school.
The project, known as NAIADE Purification System, uses solar panel situated near the river to pump water through underground pipelines to the system positioned at the centre of the community. The system has about six sand filters and UV treatment, which eliminate all bacteria in the water to purify the water and give it good taste. It also has about 17,000 litres water tank with a submersible pump and a generator to serve the whole community.
Dr Bissiw expressed concern that the people of Twa had lived without potable water for a long time, and said the Government was committed to working hard to better the lives of Ghanaians.
She said Government had commenced the implementation of 4,000 water projects in fulfillment of its promise to provide the people with potable water projects in the next five years.
Dr Bissiw pledged Government’s commitment to making water crisis in both the urban and rural communities the ‘thing of the past’. Nana Kwabena Odoom, Tufohene of Twa, commended Government and NEDAP/MELPOOL for initiating the project.
He called on private institutions to help poor communities in the country to attain basic social needs.
Mr Jones Afari Denkyi, Chief Executive Officer of MELPOOL Technology, called on the community to maintain the water system. NEDAP/MELPOOL is a manufacturer of intelligent technological solutions with its headquarters in Netherlands.
It provides sufficient food, potable water throughout the world, and smart network for sustainable energy.
