Mrs. Freda Prempeh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North in the Ahafo Region at the weekend presented 200 streetlights to improve the security situation in five towns in the constituency.

Making the presentation at Duayaw-Nkwanta, Mrs. Prempeh who is the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, noted that street lighting was an essential public service that provided a safer environment at night to residents and commuters.

She said beside crime reduction, good lighting systems had the potential to eliminate night time crashes, aid Police protection and enhanced sense of personal security in rural communities.

Mrs. Prempeh told the communities that she was determined to ensure that all their immediate needs were addressed, and advised Assembly Members in the constituency to endeavour to interact regularly with the people to identify their socio-economic challenges.

She also charged the communities to initiate self-help projects so as to attract her attention and support and that of development partners, civil society and non-governmental organisations, philanthropists, charitable organisations and corporate bodies.

Mrs. Prempeh assured the communities that she would do her part and continue to lobby for local and international support to improve on development and enhance the socio-economic livelihoods of the people.

Mr. Andrews Ofosuhene, the Assembly member for Akotosua Electoral Area at Duayaw-Nkwanta earlier said that theft and burglary were rife in the beneficiary towns – Bomaa, Mamponteng, Onye-Nkwanta, Yamfo, and Duayaw-Nkwanta due to the poor lighting system.

He said the non-functioning and lack of adequate lights at night had given rise to poor living conditions and as a result street crimes and other social vices were common in the towns and thanked the MP for her commitment towards the holistic development of communities in the constituency.
