Deputy Minister worried about prevalence of social vices among youth

Kumasi, Aug 4, GNA- Mr Osei Assibey-Antwi, Ashanti Regional Deputy Minister, on Sunday expressed worry about increasing rate of social vices that was affecting the development of the nation. He appealed to Churches and other religious organizations to assist in the campaign against sexual promiscuity, alcoholism, drug abuse and indiscipline among the youth.

Mr Assibey-Antwi said these in a speech read on his behalf at the opening of the 14th Annual Camp Meeting of the All Schools for Christ Ministry in Kumasi. It was being attended by over 200 youth under the theme "Knowing God and Making Him Known". Mr Assibey-Antwi said government had initiated the Capitation Grant and School Feeding Programme and provided infrastructure and logistics to promote education in the country. He asked the youth to take advantage of government's educational efforts and study hard to enable them to acquire skills and knowledge needed for national development. Mr Assibey-Antwi, urged parents to discipline their children to enable them cope with the challenges of life.

Mr J .C. Amoah, Deputy Regional Director of Education, advised the youth to eschew negative practices that could affect their development. Rev. Festus Abbey, Director of All Schools For Christ Ministry, said the group sought to propagate the gospel to the youth to enable them appreciate Christian values so that they could contribute meaningfully to national development. Mrs. Comfort Davies, head teacher of Afua Kobi M/A Primary School in Kumasi, said education was important in the nation's development and called on parents, guardians, teachers and others stakeholders to assist in giving the youth quality education.
