Digital Kenkey and Fish: Chorkor youth jump to the defence of Mahama

The youth of Chorkor have defended the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), following criticism of his ‘they would digitalise the kenkey’ comment.

According to the Ga youth, the NDC flagbearer’s comment was not a denigration of the Ga people in any shape or form and was only pointing to the hardship Ghanaians are facing under the current Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

The youth, at a press briefing in Chorkor, on October 23, 2024, said that the comments made by the former president are deliberately being misconstrued by elements of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) just to tarnish his image.

They claimed that all the people who held a press conference demanding an apology from the former president over his comments are NPP members who want to score political points.

“We stand united in grief and disappointment, to address a trending ill-motivated political presser by a well-known group of NPP youth of Chorkor, who in an attempt to scam the intellect of the good people of Ghana, chose to hide under the cover of ‘Ga/Dangme Youth of Chorkor’ to demand that within a week, the flagbearer of NDC and former President of Ghana, HE John Dramani Mahama, retract a statement of fact in the campaign message he delivered during his rally in the Ablekuma West constituency (not Ablekuma South as they erroneously claimed).

“Members of the press, by this (our) presser, we wish to state emphatically that, that ill and politically motivated ‘Meet the Press’ showcases nothing but a deliberate attempt to call for attention to their failed campaign, especially in the Ablekuma South Constituency and also, is a testament of the fact that they are suffering from an ‘English Grammar Comprehension Deficiency Syndrome’. We assure you that, as always, we shall not be swayed by such baseless attacks which are nothing but a stark reflection of the narrow-minded logic that has plagued our political landscape, thanks to them,” one of the youth read from a press statement.

He added, “For the benefit of the few misinformed, kindly let us revisit the words of former President John Mahama: ‘While Ghanaians cry out about hardships, Vice President Bawumia touts digitalisation. Meanwhile, our Ga people [because he was speaking in Ga land] need to afford necessities like kenkey and fish before digitalisation. Does digitalisation fill empty stomachs?’ Members of the Press, where is the denigration? Is it not astonishing that some supposed political elite would deem this statement derogatory? Anyways, we crave your indulgence to join us to forgive them—this reveals their own limited understanding of semantics.”
