Director denies alleged sale of bulbs

Sunyani Dec. 13, GNA - Mr Kwasi Anane Frimpong, Sunyani Municipal Director of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has denied allegations that the energy saving bulbs brought into the Municipality to be supplied free to the general public had been sold to some sections of the public.

The allegations said the bulbs, which were supplied by the Energy Commission to promote the national energy efficiency project, had not served the purpose as they had rather been sold to some of the people. Mr Frimpong made the denial in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday at Sunyani and challenged anyone who had bought or seen somebody selling some of the bulbs to report to the Police or the Assembly.

He said the Assembly received 470 boxes containing 23,500 energy bulbs, which had been "fairly distributed to the various communities in the municipality".

The Director said the bulbs were initially given to Assembly Members to be assisted by unit committee members to distribute them in their electoral areas but due to the same kind of rumour that was circulated, Zoom Lion Company was engaged to do the distribution under the strict supervision of staff of NADMO.

Mr Frimpong said each community in the Municipality was given about 20 boxes of the bulbs but were still found not to be enough due to the large number of residents in some areas. He said the distribution exercise had been stopped with the shortage of the bulbs and gave the assurance that the exercise would resume as soon as more bulbs were received from the Commission. The Director explained that even some houses whose occupants were not present during the exercise had their security bulbs changed, leaving their rooms as they could not gain access and promised that such houses would be visited again when the bulbs were made available. Mr Frimpong said the entire incandescent bulbs that were replaced were being kept at the Assembly's office and would be destroyed on completion of the exercise.

He advised the public to use the energy bulbs, which had lower energy consumption.
