Disgraced Martin Amidu must resign with immediate effect - NDC MP

National Democratic Congress’ Member of Parliament for Beum constituency, Mr. Daniel K. Ashiamah, has advised Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu, to resign from office with immediate effect. In his view, Mr Amidu has been embarrassed and disgraced by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The legislator said, Martin Amidu failed to heed to advice by some top members of the opposition when he was appointed to head the Special Prosecutor’s office. ‘’We told Martin Amidu he would be frustrated by the NPP but he failed to listen,’’ the NDC MP told Kwame Tutu, host of Frontline today [Thursday].

He called on the anti-corruption campaigner and former attorney general to resign immediately because he has already ‘’hanged himself’’. He said, ‘’It is time for him [Martin Amidu] to resign. He is an element for prosecution.

He has received salary for seven months without any job to show. He should have rejected his monthly salary and insisted on getting the needed resources before accepting to receive salary. Excuse me to say, Martin Amidu is now a subject of ridicule. He allowed himself to be used by the NPP. He should resign quickly,’’ he insisted.

Speaking at the National Audit Forum organised by the Ghana Audit Service yesterday [Wednesday] , Mr. Amidu indicated that some appointees of the president are frustrating his work. “The success of the experiment would depend on the extent to which Ministries, Departments and Agencies in government with the responsibility to cooperate with the office to achieve the vision of the president who championed the setting up of the office.”

“The present situation where critical ministries and agencies have failed even with our limited constraints or refused to produce public records on demand to aid the office in critical investigations, offences running into millions of cedis, clearly demonstrates that there is divergence between the president’s vision and that of some of his appointees”

“The success in the fight against corruption will depend on the extent to which the president’s vision is supported by his operatives. The personality and reputation of the Special Prosecutor cannot be a solution to a problem which has festered since independence”.

“I am saying this for the public to understand that we have set up an office. We have to organize that office, have the requisite personnel. It does not take one day. The law says 90 days after the assumption of office of the Special Prosecutor, pursuant legislation must be enacted, but as I speak today, I have no legislation so I use my common sense,” Mr Amidu said.
