Provost for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (KNUST), Prof Charles Marfo has cautioned the Vice President and Flagbearer for the ruling New Patriotic Party Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to distance his campaign from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo if he hopes to win the upcoming Presidential election.

Prof Charles Marfo’s advice comes on the back of the huge public backlash that followed President Akufo Addo’s controversial Founders’ Day Speech in which he discounted the singling out of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as a figure to be solely celebrated as a founder of Ghana.

Many have argued that the president’s couching of August 4 as a holiday and shifting the apostrophe sign in the Founder’s, is part of a grand agenda to distort the history of Ghana to the advantage of his family members whom he feels also contributed to Ghana’s independence.

According to Prof Charles Marfo, Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team has to intentionally distance themselves from the President, a step he believes is strategic.

“Even some vibrant people in the party have seen this, so for me am not so surprised the core team of the Bawumia campaign may hardly come along with him.

“It’s intentional, but if it’s not intentional, am telling the Dr. Bawumia campaign it should be intentional,” he cautioned.

Speaking in an interview with Millicent Safo-Adu on Bresosem at Abusuafm, Prof Marfo contended that Dr. Bawumia has the chance of winning December’s election arguing that the opposition National Democratic Congress was struggling to gain momentum in their campaign.

“If you see how the NDC is struggling with their campaign, Bawumia has a clear chance of winning,” he observed.

He warned Dr. Bawumia to be mindful of the company he keeps on the campaign tour, urging him to avoid standing on the same campaign platform with individuals who may irritate voters with their choice of words.

“If he wants to win, he should not be standing on a platform with personalities who will come and use words that will only irritate people.”

He further urged President Akufo-Addo to repent from the way he conducts his affairs, otherwise, when he is out of power, even within his own party, he will hardly see people coming to greet him.
