Doctor says pregnant women should buy drugs on prescription

Kokoado (Ash), July 25, GNA – Dr Kwadwo Nyarko-Jectey, Medical Superintendent of the Kuntanase Government Hospital, has said drugs should be sold to pregnant women only on prescription.

He said the situation where they could buy drugs from the counter of pharmacy and chemical shops must stop to prevent still births and other health complications for both the mother and the foetus.

Dr Nyarko-Jectey was speaking at a mid-year review meeting of the Bosomtwe District Health Management Team at Kokoado near Kuntanase.

Attended by health professionals, chiefs and assembly members and other stakeholders, the meeting discussed ways of improving the quality of care for the people.

He cautioned pregnant women against taking concoctions and resorting to the use of enema, saying, this could be dangerous to their health as well as their unborn babies

He called for collaboration among health workers, chiefs and other opinions leaders in the promotion of health.

Mr Joseph Adomako, the District Director of Health Services, reiterated the determination of the health personnel to work hard and maintain high standards of professionalism.

He praised the community-based surveillance volunteers (CBSV) for their dedication, hard work and commitment that had contributed to the improvement of health delivery in the area.

Mr Asare Bediako, Chairman of the District Assembly’s sub-Committee on Social Services, drew attention to the need to strengthen data collection on diseases.

He gave the assurance that the assembly would do everything to build more and improve health infrastructure in the district.
