Accra, Aug 29, GNA - The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) on Monday expressed shock and regret at the tragic death of three senior Urologists when their vehicle was involved in accident on the Accra-Kumasi road last Saturday.

The deceased are; Professor J.M.K Quartey, First Consultant Urologist and founder of both the Anatomy and Urology Departments of the University of Ghana Medical School, Dr Isaac Bentsi Consultant Urologist and Dr Benjamin Osei-Wiafe Specialist Urologist.

They were returning to Accra after undertaking an outreach programme at the Sunyani Regional Hospital A Statement singed by Professor Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, President of GMA, said "these three colleagues died in the line of duty while providing the much needed specialist services that the scarcity of our specialist grade has imposed on the health care delivery system in the country". Professor Adu-Gyamfi called on the Government, other relevant agencies, and "the country at large to draw lessons from this tragic event whilst we deeply mourn them".

The statement recalled that in 2003 the GMA devoted it's fourth Annual Public Lecture on the issue of "Carnage on our Roads" due to the huge impact this has on the negative health status of the country. It said, "as a nation we should resolve that from now on we shall focus our attention on reducing these needless deaths on our roads". The Association expressed its deepest condolence to the bereaved families.
