Don't Postpone Re-Opening of Schools - MP

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mr. Mahama Ayariga has called on the Regional Coordinating Council of the Upper East Region to revoke its decision to postpone the re-opening of all schools in the Bawku municipality. He said postponing the re-opening of schools in the area would be detrimental to the interests of children in the constituency.

In a statement the MP said there is no relationship between the organisation of the funeral of the late Madam Hawa Yakubu and the education of children of the constituency because she will be buried in Pusiga (where she hails from), about 20 kilometers away from Bawku and schools in Bawku Central are nowhere near the burial grounds.

"All schools in the country are re-opening on Tuesday 2nd May, 2007 and the late Madam Hawa Yakubu will be laid to rest on Saturday, 5th of May," he said and added that the funeral should not be the reason why the children in the constituency are denied access to school for an entire week.

"I do not believe that the late Madam Hawa Yakubu wishes to be remembered by way of the denial of children in the constituency access to education," he said.

He said the directive is inconsistent, illegal and a bad policy to the country's educational development since that was not what Madam Hawa Yakubu stood for and advised that it should be revoked.
